Abandoned?

When I saw this good-sized nest at the bottom of our driveway, I realized how little I knew about bees. Is this a bee's nest, a wasp's nest or a hornet's nest? Do they abandon them this time of the year? If so, where do they go? I know some bees hibernate, but this nest would not provide much protection from the elements. It sure is beautiful, though.

This is the nest of the bald faced hornet - an agressive hornet that fiercely protects its nest. They hibernate in the next and actually are able to stay out of the elements. There are live pupae in it it. I would spray it down with bug spray, set it in a bucket for a week or so and make sure there is no activity, then let it dry out slowly. I did this (and remember I'm allergic to them) and harvested the paper in its swirling patterns for some of my artwork. We have one waiting for us down to the road from us. We have just been waiting for the bees to be dormant with nights towards freezing. Spray it really good and wait two weeks for the spray tow work. Remember to keep it covered and don't peek.
