Our Last Summer Vacation

Bill and I headed for Astoria last weekend for one more opportunity to spend time together. On the way our first stop was Sauvie Island since Bill had never been there. We spied about 15 egrets enjoying a pond behind a wall of trees. I climbed down through little briars to get these pictures! They will try to perch in the most awkward places!
 Egrets make beautiful reflections!

The view from our room the first night in Astoria.

Our first evening we rode these old-fashioned bikes along the river front. On the way back to our hotel we stopped for a wonderful dinner and then returned in the dark :-). We had a ball!
We saw this "cruise boat" docked in the harbor.

This was a picturesque old boathouse.

One night we stayed at one of our favorite hotels, The Cannery Pier. We determined to enjoy it as much as possible since it will probably be our last time there (due to highly inflated rates).

View of the Astoria Bridge from our room (the hotel is near the mouth of the Columbia River)

We drove to the Longview Peninsula and enjoyed driving on the beach. I captured these pelicans hovering over the water. Their formations are beautiful.
I enjoy watching shore birds, and these cormorants were especially interesting as they dried their wings.
This great blue heron perched outside our hotel window.
We saw a gazillion boats and ships! Here are just a few.
I never tire of watching these vessels pass by the window!
One of our last stops was at the docks in Astoria. They are loaded with sea lions!

It is amazing to watch them haul their big old bodies out of the water!
 He has an itch!
Often we saw them frolicking in the water in twos.

We made three more enjoyable stops down the coast on our way home. We kayaked Nehalem River and saw blue herons, a green heron, sandpipers, kingfishers, and a river otter. We also had a salmon jump out of the water in front of us.

We stopped at my brother Chris' and he gave us some wonderful smoked salmon right out of his smoker! Doesn't that make you drool?

We stopped at Jim and Glenys' and enjoyed time with them.

It was a wonderful, relaxing trip. I'm so grateful for the time we spent together!
